WS2 is formed by stacking S-W-S unit layers with a sandwich structure. The unit layer is composed of two sulfur atom layers (the upper and lower layer) and a tungsten atom layer in the middle through a covalent bond. And there is only a weak Van der Waals interaction between the unit layers. This special layered structure makes tungsten disulfide easy for lithium ions to intercalate and deintercalate.
