Violet tungsten oxide nanoparticles for energy efficient glass can be prepared by a sputtering method, a microemulsion method, a chemical vapor deposition method, a hydrothermal synthesis method, a sol-gel method or a solvothermal method. Also, there are other synthesis methods for producing tungsten oxides.

In 2008, some experts used the electron irradiation method to prepare W18O49 nanowires. And the synthesized uniform W18O49 nanowires have a diameter of about 10nm and a length of about 100nm. In the experiment, a layered shell/core structure (PbWO4/WO3) was first prepared by hydrothermal method, and then concentrated by electron beam irradiation in a 300kV transmission electron microscope. Adopting the electron irradiation method, the monocrystalline W18O49 nanowires are directly grown on the TEM grid, which not only can be synthesized in a few seconds, but can ensure the performance of the monocrystalline nanowires. The W18O49 nanowires can grow rapidly within 30s, and the length of the nanowires depends on the irradiation time.
